Iraq asks UN to help repair bomb damage

The Iraqi authorities say they want United Nations help to repair a twelfth century riverside palace in Baghdad, which was damaged in last week's bombing raids.

The request was made to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO.

The agency's director of Cultural Heritage, Mounir Boushnaki, told the BBC his organisation would consider the request.

He expressed the hope that donors would come forward to provide funds for restoration.
