Scottish Premier preview ![]() Rod Wallace: "One of the best periods of my career" Scottish football fans could be forgiven for suffering from a sense of déjà vu. Rangers are top of the Scottish Premier Division as the season enters the festive period and seem set to win their 10th title in 11 years. They begin their charge into the New Year with a Boxing day visit from St Johnstone, who they beat in the Scottish League Cup final last month.
The former Leeds and Southampton striker has hit 15 goals this season, and at 29, is clearly enjoying the new challenge afforded by the Scottish league. "It has to be one of the best moves I've ever made and now to repay them I just go out and do my best and try to score as many goals as I can." said Wallace. The arrival of German goalkeeper Stefan Klos from Borussia Dortmund gives Advocaat a dilemma, with Finnish international Antti Niemi hoping to keep his place. Defender Colin Hendry is expected to be fit for the game, after missing last week's victory over Hearts through an ankle injury, but Dutch defender Arthur Numan will not be available. For the Saints, manager Sandy Clark will be choose a front two from Paddy Connolly, Roddy Grant, Nathan Lowndes and Miguel Samao. George O' Boyle will not figure in his plans, but defender Gary Bollan returns from suspension. The Saints travel to Ibrox on the back of a six match unbeaten run and a good win over Motherwell last weekend.
The hosts have more defensive worries, with Andy Tod suspended and Craig Ireland still nursing a damaged foot. The visitors are unchanged, and bidding for a third straight win. Although most eyes will be focused on Ibrox on Saturday afternoon, expect a fair share of interest on the intriguing meeting of second placed Kilmarnock and fifth placed Hearts. Killie will be without French striker Jerome Vareille whose shoulder injury will keep him out until the New Year. Either Ally McCoist or Mark Roberts will step in. For the visitors, another French striker, Stephane Adam, will also miss out through a hamstring injury as will defender Gary Naysmith. Adam's likely replacement is Derek Holmes. Hearts need a win to avoid three straight defeats. Motherwell manager Billy Davies has yet to decide whether to add youngster Lee McCulloch to his experienced front two of John Spencer and Owen Coyle for the visit of Dundee United.
Third place Celtic travel to Dundee on Sunday, and will be without Craig Burley, whose return has been delayed after problems in training, whilst Jackie McNamara and Marc Rieper are rated as seriously doubtful. Dundee's only injury worry is goalkeeper Robert Douglas, while defender Willie Miller starts a three match suspension. Both sides have shown patchy form recently, although Celtic's 5-0 drubbing of Dunfermline last weekend should give the visitors confidence after some curious results. |
