Talking Point joins this week with BBC World Service Radio's Europewide to discuss whether Switzerland should join the European Union.

For most of this decade, the Swiss have been dithering over Europe. Should they or shouldn't they join the rush to be in the European Union?

In 1992 a resounding majority of them said no to even joining an allied free trade zone.

Next year Switzerland will find itself surrounded by countries adopting the single European currency. And the Swiss government is keen to argue this should be another reason to join the EU.

But many people still fear the erosion of national sovereignty and the economic costs of membership.
