England reverse rankings slide

Glenn Hoddle - hoping for success in 1999

England will continue their Euro 2000 qualifying campaign in the New Year with the boost of a two place jump in the FIFA world rankings.

Glenn Hoddle's have risen to ninth in the new ranking list, but overall they are down five places from their position at the end of 1997.

Brazil head the list from world champions France and Germany, with World Cup semi-finalists Croatia in fourth place after moving up 15 places in the past 12 months.

There is mixed news for other British sides with Scotland slipping two places to 38th, Northern Ireland leaping seven to 86th and Wales rising five to 97th.

Mick McCarthjy's Republic of Ireland side move up one place to 56th.
