Indonesian soldiers on trial for torture

Eleven members of Indonesia's special forces are due to go on trial today Wednesday in a military court, accused of kidnapping and torturing opponents of former president Suharto.

An earlier army inquiry said members of the unit had been involved in abductions and torture in the two years prior to the riots that ousted the president last May.

The commander of the unit, Prabowo Subianto, is Mr Suharto's son in law.

He left the country for Jordan after being discharged from the army in August.

Jordan confirmed yesterday Tuesday that Mr Prabowo has been granted Jordanian citizenship.
