Wednesday, December 23, 1998 Published at 10:25 GMT Sport: Tennis Ticket surge for Davis Cup ![]() Henman and Rusedski: Pulling in the crowds Organisers of the UK's Davis Cup tie with the United States are considering increasing the capacity of the venue because of unprecedented advance demand for tickets. With more than three months to go before the World Group tie at the National Indoor Arena at Birmingham, 60% of the original seat allocation of 24,000 over the three days of the match have been sold. Next year is the 100th anniversary of the Davis Cup which began in 1900 with a match between Britain and the US. Lawn Tennis Association tournament director Gavin Fletcher said: "No previous Davis Cup tie has captured the imagination of the British public in the same way as this one. "British supporters are booking from all over the country because they anticipate cheering Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski to victory over the Americans whom we have not beaten since 1935. "That is why we are looking again at the seat allocation and will monitor the situation closely over the next few weeks." The LTA are also currently negotiating for a special celebrity doubles match to follow the sole Davis Cup doubles match on 3 April. |
