Hughes seals Dons' delight ![]() Michael Hughes (centre): Match winning goal Wimbledon 2-1 Charlton Michael Hughes' second-half strike capped Wimbledon's comeback in the South London derby at Selhurst Park and sentenced Charlton to their sixth consecutive defeat.
However, the equaliser from Jason Euell came four minutes later with Hughes securing victory in the second half. "I find it hard to contain my anger. There is no lack of confidence when they come knocking on my door looking for a better contract or to be put in the side. I'm fed up with it," said Charlton boss Alan Curbishley.
Sorrows of Sullivan Wimbledon boss Joe Kinnear though will be unhappy with the form of Neil Sullivan. Straight from the kick-off the Scottish international goalkeeper dropped a harmless looking Shaun Newton cross at the feet of Steve Brown.
Minutes later Sullivan called for a distant ball, leaving his centre-half Chris Perry at Charlton striker Steve Jones' mercy. Jones fluffed his chance but in the 24th minute, the frontman again slipped his marker to fire wide from the edge of the area. Five minutes later though came the Addicks' reward for their early pressure. Redfearn picked up a cross-field ball from 30 yards out and stroked a breath-taking shot round the static Sullivan. Revitalised Dons The goal seemed to breathe new life into the Dons. Within minutes Euell had equalised. Among a crowd of defenders the England under-21 international reacted first to a Hughes cross to fire home from eight yards. Back in the game, Wimbledon stepped up the pace and former Charlton striker Carl Leaburn headed across goal to set up Marcus Gayle. However, goalkeeper Sasa Ilic plucked the ball from Gayle's feet and hoisted a long ball forward. Newton gave chase along the right and put in a useful cross which seemed destined to bring about a goal as once more the ball eluded Sullivan.
The start of the second half saw Dean Blackwell going off for Alan Kimble. And it was the substitute's contribution which was the source of the goal. His long pass to Leaburn saw the Dons' frontman lay-off to Hughes on the right. As harmless as his position seemed to Ilic, it was as dangerous as had been Redfearn's before. The Irishman spotted Ilic off his line and fired home to put Wimbledon in front. While Charlton powered forward at every opportunity they could rarely find the target, highlighting Alan Curbishley's strange decision to drop both Andy Hunt and Clive Mendonca. For Sullivan, though, the day ended as it had begun - with a blotted copybook. His 90th minute booking capped off a poor performance. But it failed to spoil the afternoon for Dons manager Kinnear, who said: "It's nice to end the year with three points. We've only lost once at home this season and now we're just three points off third spot. "Their long balls were easier for us to cut out and we got stronnger as the game went on. They're fighting for their lives down there but I think, in the end, we wanted it more. Wimbledon: Sullivan, Cunningham, Perry, Blackwell, Thatcher, Earle, Gayle, Ardley, Leaburn, Hughes, Euell.
