Cottee makes Leicester's day

Tony Cottee: Ruined Wednesday's Boxing Day

Sheffield Wed 0-1 Leicester

Tony Cottee netted his eighth goal of the season as Leicester bagged their second away win in the Premiership this season.

BBC Radio 5 Live's Peter Slater reports on Sheffield Wednesday v Leicester
Deprived of Paolo Di Canio and Benito Carbone, Sheffield Wednesday suffered their first league defeat at Hillsborough for four months.

In their five games without both of their stars this season, the Owls have now lost three and drawn two and scored just one goal.

Equally unsurprising, was the news before kick-off that AWOL Di Canio had been suspended without pay by the club for a further two weeks.

With Carbone also suspended for one game due to an accumulation of bookings, manager Danny Wilson paired Ritchie Humphreys up front with Andy Booth.

But the lack of strength-in-depth in the squad was underlined with Wilson naming Owen Morrisson on the bench, with the youngster the leading scorer for the Owls' Under-17 side.

With 23 minutes remaining the teenager replaced Humphreys, with Wilson desperately searching for the equaliser - albeit to no avail - after Leicester had gone into the break having been gifted the lead.

It was deserved as Wednesday had lacked any creativity and urgency, despite their usual hard-working display, but City were the more forceful. Emile Heskey had twice gone close in the space of 10 minutes prior to Cottee grabbing what proved to be the only goal of the game.

Heskey saw a scissors-kick fly inches wide of the post in the 10th minute, before being allowed to cut back from the by-line and fire in an angled drive which Pavel Srnicek pushed away at his near-post.

Then in the 34th minute, Andy Hinchcliffe's poor back pass sent Cottee through, and although Srnicek looked to have done enough, the 33-year-old somehow squeezed the ball home from an improbable angle.

Wednesday could have equalised from the kick-off when Humphreys pulled the ball back from the left-wing for Petter Rudi standing on the penalty spot, but the Norwegian international sliced wide when it looked easier to score.

Another chance came and went 12 minutes after the re-start when Niclas Alexandersson controlled a Dejan Stefanovic far-post cross superbly but he also miscued his shot.

Srnicek produced a stunning double save from Heskey and Guppy in the 66th minute, although when the Czech keeper spilled another Heskey shot moments later, Cottee looked set to pounce on the rebound, but was just thwarted.

Wednesday threw everything forward at the death in an unsuccessful bid to salvage a point, with sub Lee Briscoe firing a 20-yard drive just wide.

Sheffield Wednesday: Srnicek, Atherton, Jonk, Walker, Booth, Humphreys, Stefanovic, Hinchcliffe, Thome, Rudi, Alexandersson. Subs: Pressman, Briscoe, Magilton, Sonner, Morrisson.

Leicester: Keller, Sinclair, Walsh, Izzet, Lennon, Heskey, Guppy, Elliott, Ullathorne, Impey, Cottee. Subs: Taggart, Savage, Marshall, Arphexad, Zagorakis. Referee: M Reed (Birmingham)
