Everton and Derby draw blank

Everton 0-0 Derby

There were no goals and no surprises from two teams with miserly defences and shy forwards.

BBC Radio 5 Live's Stuart Hall reports on Everton v Derby
It was an awful spectacle for a 39,000 crowd played in a gale with litter swirling round the pitch.

Neither side had the width to open up play - or a forward with the bite to settle the match.

For Goodison fans it was yet another blank. Out of 10 home games, six have ended 0-0. Sure, there have been eight clean sheets in those games - but only three goals for.

And home and away they have just 12 goals in 19 games.

Meanwhile draw specialists Derby - their 10th in 19 games and they have been beaten only twice on their travels this season - chalked up another point to keep them 11th.

The Rams wasted one of only a few chances just before half-time.

Horacio Carbonari thumped in a long-range free-kick which keeper Thomas Myhre could only beat out. But Paulo Wanchope lofted the loose ball over from close in.

At the other end Don Hutchison and John Collins put through Ibrahima Bakayoko but Derby keeper Mart Poom, falling backwards, palmed away his deflected shot with agility.

Everton threw on Nicky Barmby in the second half and stepped up the pressure. But Poom's goal could not be breached.

Everton: Myhre, Ball, Dacourt, Unsworth, Collins, Hutchison, Materazzi, Bakayoko, Dunne, Bilic, Cadamarteri. Subs: Barmby, Short, Grant, Branch, Simonsen.

Derby: Poom, Carbonari, Powell, Wanchope, Delap, Laursen, Prior, Carsley, Elliott, Eranio, Kozluk. Subs: Hoult, Sturridge, Harper, Bridge-Wilkinson, Hunt.

Referee: S Lodge (Barnsley)
