Aussie ace foils Spurs

Chris Armstrong makes a powerful run for Tottenham

Coventry 1-1 Tottenham

John Aloisi opened his Premiership goal account with a superb solo effort to rescue a valuable point for the Sky Blues.

BBC Radio 5 Live's John Rodda reports on Coventry v Spurs
The former Portsmouth striker, bought for £600,000 two weeks ago, came off the substitutes' bench to score a deserved equaliser after Coventry dominated the second half.

England defender Sol Campbell had put Spurs in front before the interval and they looked like going home with a win after holding out until the 81st minute.

But Australian international Aloisi latched onto a cross before beating two defenders and striking a low left-foot shot into the corner.

Veteran 'keeper returns

Coventry manager Gordon Strachan was forced into an unwelcome late change when Magnus Hedman's injury meant a chance for 41-year-old goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic.

But there was little in the way of goalmouth excitement until Tottenham broke the deadlock after 17 minutes.

A floated corner from Darren Anderton was flicked on by Les Ferdinand at the near post and Campbell did the rest as he turned the ball home from close range.

Coventry could have gone further behind after 25 minutes when David Ginola's left-wing cross was deflected invitingly into the path of Anderton but he failed to get full power into his shot from 15 yards.

The home side enjoyed a better spell with Boateng prominent in a wide midfield role and Noel Whelan squandered a good chance to put them on level terms.

Stephen Froggatt's centre picked out the former Leeds star unmarked on the six yard line but he sent his header over the bar.

Coventry raise the tempo

Ferdinand flashed a 25-yard drive inches wide early in the second half but Coventry laid siege to the visitors goal from then on.

Ian Walker was called into meaningful action for the first time to turn aside a curling effort by Froggatt and he was soon tested again as he diverted a Whelan header onto the post and reacted quickly to block the same player's follow-up effort.

Coventry have lacked a centre forward since Dion Dublin's departure for Aston Villa but Aloisi showed he could be the man to fill the gap after being given his chance by Strachan.

He collected Boateng's centre before skipping past Stephen Carr and Luke Young and directing his shot past Walker.

Coventry: Hedman, Nilsson, Edworthy, Williams, Shaw, McAllister, Boateng, Soltvedt, Froggatt, Huckerby, Whelan. Subs: Ogrizovic, Breen, Telfer, Aloisi, Shilton.

Tottenham: Walker, Carr, Campbell, Young, Nielsen, Fox, Anderton, Ginola, Sinton, Ferdinand, Armstrong. Subs: Baardsen, Calderwood, Edinburgh, Iversen, Clemence.
