Indian patent changes approved

The Indian parliament has approved drastic changes to the law on patents - a key demand of the World Trade Organisation.

The new measures provide exclusive marketing rights to foreign firms and will eventually allow for product patents.

The existing law allows only patenting of manufacturing processes.

There's been strong opposition to the changes, with the opposition arguing that it will make medicines much costlier, and serve the interests of the multinationals.
