Wednesday, December 23, 1998 Published at 11:40 GMT Sport D-day looms for snooker boss ![]() Terry Griffiths is just one professional unhappy with the WPBSA Former world snooker champions Steve Davis and Terry Griffiths will spearhead an attempt to overthrow the board of the sport's governing body, the WPBSA, at Wednesday's annual general meeting in Birmingham.
He has been the target of severe criticism within the game, with many of the top pros claiming that under Williams, the game has lost its profile and some of its revenue. "The present board are square pegs in round holes." said six-times world champion Davis. "They know nothing about big business and are not prepared to restructure the association." Williams is defiant in the face of the criticism, saying that he is "more determined than ever to remain in position as long as I can so that I can help to safeguard our members from being taken over by liars and scandal-mongers." Other professionals looking for positions of power are Dennis Taylor, Tony Knowles, Jason Ferguson and Mark Johnston-Allen. Of the five seats available, four will see the current members seeking re-election. They include Ray Reardon, like Davis a six-times world champion.
He has since brought an action against the WPBSA which is due to be heard in the High Court next month. BBC Sports analyst Clive Everton has also had run-ins with the association, having found himself banned from press rooms at both the Grand Prix and the UK Championships. |
