Coup leader's supporters protest in Paraguay

Several hundred supporters of Paraguay's former armed forces chief, Lino Oviedo, have protested outside the Supreme Court in the capital, Asuncion.

Shots were fired at the building, as the demonstrators called on the judges to resign.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that Mr Oviedo should return to jail for attempting a coup two years ago.

Their decision was ignored by President Raul Cubas, who ordered Mr Oviedo's release from prison last August.

The BBC's South America correspondent says the latest protest is a sign of the increasing tension between Mr Oviedo and his supporters, and the Supreme Court and Parliament, which want him back behind bars.
