Tuesday, December 22, 1998 Published at 19:19 GMT UK Have cash, won't travel ![]() Janette Watson says she will spend her winnings on a house A lottery jackpot winner has made her longest journey ever to pick up her £2.3m cheque - and has vowed not to spend her cash on exotic holidays. Janette Watson, a 43-year-old shop assistant, had never ventured further than the 20-mile trip between her home in Goole, east Yorkshire, and Brigg where she grew up. Joy at scooping £2,372,249 in Saturday's draw was tempered by travel sickness, as Miss Watson, a single mother, felt ill for most of the 40-mile trip to Leeds to pick her the cheque on Monday.
Miss Watson has travelled half a mile from her council house to work by bike or on foot for the last 28 years. Although her 19-year-old daughter Tracey passed her driving test two months ago she has never been in a car with her. Miss Watson's father, John "Geordie" Watson, said: "When we've been to Brigg, she's been sick. We only got her here today with great difficulty. We had to keep talking to her non-stop to take her mind off the journey." Keeping it in the family Miss Watson said she would buy a new house with her winnings and her daughter would get a fast car. She said she would give her family cash for Christmas. Camelot, which runs the National Lottery, has given her cash in advance because her enormous cheque will not clear until after the Christmas holiday. The happy winner sells lottery tickets herself but bought her winning Lucky Dip ticket from a shop across the road on Saturday. She only realised she had won the following day after she had spent Saturday evening celebrating her mother's lottery win of the grand sum of £10. When she realised she had the winning ticket, she clutched it in bed all night. "I don't know what else I'm going to do. I'm really in shock. This Christmas is definitely going to be brilliant." The winning numbers were 9 10 18 25 28 48 and the bonus was 34. |
