Shares gave up early gains as profit taking set in to leave the benchmark Dow Jones index in negative territory.

The index was off six at 8982 points, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq index slipped even further - down 20 points to 2117.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was off five at 1197.

Traders said most most players were ignoring the meeting of the Federal Reserve's interest-rate panel. Wall Street does not expect the central bank to cut rates.
