Van Hooijdonk ban upheld

The Dutch striker will have a quiet Boxing Day

Nottingham Forest have failed in their bid to have Pierre van Hooijdonk's three-match ban overturned.

The decision means the Premiership strugglers will be without the Dutch striker for their Boxing Day trip to Manchester United and home games against Southampton and Portsmouth in the FA Cup.

Van Hooijdonk was controversially sent off by referee Mike Riley for a late challenge on Leicester defender Steve Walsh earlier this month.

He had scored Forest's only goal in the 3-1 defeat at Filbert Street.

Forest appealed against the red card but Riley has told the club that he stands by his decision.

Van Hooijdonk remains on the transfer list. But last week Forest manager Dave Bassett dismissed speculation linking the player with a £5m move to Athletico Madrid.
