Japan to launch surveillance satellites

Japan has announced plans to launch four surveillance satellites in the year 2002, in a move to monitor North Korea's weapons programme.

The decision follows the incident last August when a rocket launched from North Korea flew over Japan.

The Japanese military was criticised for failing to spot the rocket, and having to rely on American and South Korean intelligence.

A government spokesman said the satellites would fulfil defence and diplomatic needs, as well as gathering information on natural disasters.
