Novotna returns to Melbourne

Jana Novotna - can she maintain her success in 1999?

Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna will play next month's Australian Open after missing the event for the last three tears.

The world number three accepted a place in the women's draw after Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland withdrew from the tournament, which takes place from January 18-31.

It means 19 of the world's top 20 women and the entire men's top 20 will be competing in Melbourne.

"This is a good boost to an already exceptional field," said tournament director Paul McNamee.

Novotna took part in every Australian Open between 1988 and 1995 and reached the 1991 final, when she lost to Monica Seles.

The 30-year-old finally achieved her first success in the Grand Slam event by beating Nathalie Tauziat of France at Wimbledon last summer.
