Lithuania has abolished the death penalty.

The Lithuanian parliament voted on Monday night to replace capital punishment with life imprisonment, bringing the country's penal code more into line with that of other European countries.

The change followed a ruling by the Constitutional Court that death sentences were against the country's constitution.

Nine convicts who had been awaiting execution will now serve life sentences instead.
