Angry Gooch tears into England

Embarrassed - Mike Atherton leads England from the field

Tour manager Graham Gooch followed Greg Blewett's example by laying into England for an "abject" performance following the nine wicket defeat in Hobart.

Pat Murphy: The Aussie papers have weighted into them with gleeful gusto
Blewett helped himself to a double century as an Australian XI reached their victory target of 376 for one in just 55.2 overs.

"It was a flat wicket and the declaration was way short. The way things were going, if we had set them 500 they would have got them," Gooch said afterwards.

"It should have been a good exercise in trying to restrict the Australians but you can't bowl on both sides of the wicket.

"It's not so much the loss as the manner of it and I would have expected us to make them work much harder for their runs,"

England tried seven bowlers during the home side's second innings but did not manage a single maiden over as Blewett and partner Corey Richards piled up the runs.

Darren Gough, Dean Headley and Alan Mullally did not play in Hobart and it will be a big surprise if all three do not now keep their places for the fourth Ashes Test, starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

"We were never going to rip through a side on that pitch and we were totally abject today - the way we tried to defend that total was not up to standard," added Gooch.

"You have to bowl on one side of the wicket and bowl to a field. The players have to show pride and knuckle down and do their jobs - they should be very upset by that performance."

"The players have to examine themselves. I'm upset about it because I'm not in it for this sort of performance. I want to see England challenging and being competitive."

Gooch's view was echoed by chairman of selectors David Graveney, who accused the players of "giving up".

"Some of the batsmen have had time at the wicket, although the quality of the bowling they were facing was questionable. Our bowlers, though, have had a very bad experience and did not do enough to help themselves," he added.

Blewett's unbeaten 213 took his total to 525 runs in three innings against England during their tour.

"I thought it was going to be very hard work, but it was just one of those days when just about every shot we went for paid off," the South Australian said.

"We took a lot of risks and we thought they might have tried to bowl a bit more one-day stuff, right into your toes and things like that, but they didn't bowl as well this innings as they did in the first."
