Blewett humiliates England

Records tumble to Blewett

Greg Blewett continued to chalk up milestones as the Australian XI raced to a crushing nine-wicket victory over England on an explosive final day of their tour match at the Bellerive Oval.

BBC Sydney Correspondent Michael Peschardt: Another disappointing performance
Despite being set a target of 376 off just 78 overs, the Australian XI - effectively the second national team - raced to their emphatic triumph with 22.4 overs of the day remaining after Blewett spearheaded their charge with an unbeaten 213.

It took his tally for the season to 1175, having become only the third Australian batsman in history to pass 1,000 before Christmas - following Bobby Simpson in 1962 and David Hookes 20 years later - on 38.

He also joined legendary figures like Don Bradman, Allan Border and Charlie Macartney as the sixth player to hit successive centuries in four innings.

But as impressive as Blewett's achievements were, the manner in which he and Corey Richards dismissed England's attack was even more memorable and leaves the tourists with serious problems to address before they assemble in Melbourne for the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

England had declared on 199 for three after resuming 342 ahead overnight, with opener Mark Butcher ending a depressing run of seven innings without reaching 50 since scoring a century in the first Test at Brisbane.

Butcher's innings was soon put in the shade, however, by the ruthless and cavalier manner in which the Australian XI destroyed all the tourists' attempts to restrict their scoring, which made the result a virtual foregone conclusion within a few overs.

Blewett shared an opening partnership of 31 with Matthew Elliott, who mistimed a hook facing Alex Tudor and the ball bounced down onto his stumps to dismiss him for eight.

But it was the only good fortune England enjoyed as Blewett and Richards quickly set the tone for the Australian run rampage by smashing every bowler, none of whom managed a maiden, to all parts of the Hobart ground.

It took Blewett just 92 balls to reach his sixth century in as many matches this season. And Richards soon followed at a comparatively pedestrian rate of 107 deliveries.

By the time the South Australian batsman hit the winning runs, their partnership was worth 345 in just 206 minutes off 307 balls, and Richards ended the day on 138 not out.
