The European Central Bank is meeting in Frankfurt today to decide on the level of interest rates for countries joining the new single currency when it is launched in ten days time.
The BBC Europe business correspondent says the bank is expected to confirm that the project will begin with the main interest rate set at three-per-cent.
But with the European economy slowing down, our correspondent says the bank will come under pressure to lower rates early in the new year.
