The Greek parliament has passed the government's austerity budget for next year, despite anti-government protests earlier this month.

The left-wing government says the budget is crucial if Greece is to be meet the criteria to join the new European single currency by 2001 -- two years after its launch.

Greek trades unions had protested at austerity plans to slash the government's budget deficit and bring down inflation.
