Day of violence in Kashmir

Police in Indian-administered Kashmir say nine people have been killed in separatist violence in the past 24 hours.

The victims include four civilians, who were all members of the same family.

Their bullet-ridden bodies were found at Kujar-Kawdrag near Kulgam Town south of Srinagar.

Police sources say the two brothers and their sons - who had links with separatist groups - were killed by pro-India militants.

On Sunday two pro-government militants were killed in the same town in an ambush by Muslim separatists.

In a separate incident, two members of the separatist Hizb-ul Mujahideen group were killed in a clash with soldiers in Anantnag district.

The final victim was a businessman, identified as Firdost Ahmed, who was killed by separatists in Baramulla north of Srinagar.

More than 20,000 people have died in the disputed state since 1989.

India and Pakistan have been fighting over the Himalayan state since partition 50 years ago. Islamabad says the whole area should have gone to Pakistan, but India argues that it is an integral part of its territory, and accuses Pakistan of sponsoring a separatist campaign in Indian Kashmir.
