Monday, December 21, 1998 Published at 18:44 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Indonesia says ethnic Chinese women raped in May riots The Indonesian government says more than sixty ethnic Chinese women were raped during the riots last May, but it says there is no evidence the attacks systematically targetted the Chinese community. The statement follows a report last month by an independent panel investigating the rioting, which led to the downfall of President Suharto. The panel had concluded that some members of the military encouraged looting. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
