UN envoy encouraged over East Timor

The United Nations envoy for Indonesia, Jamsheed Marker, has said he's received a lot of encouragement from the Indonesian authorities to settle the conflict in the disputed territory of East Timor.

Speaking after talks with the Foreign Minister Ali Alatas in Jakarta, he said every aspect of the autonomy plan for East Timor was discussed, and the most important task now was to keep calm and preserve the atmosphere of peace.

Mr Marker also had talks with President Habibie, who thanked the UN for its efforts over East Timor.
