Writer's steps re-traced
Broadcaster Eric Robson walked with Alfred Wainwright
Hundreds of walkers are lining up to follow in the footsteps of legendary Lake District guide book writer Alfred Wainwright.
His books - which have sold more than one million copies worldwide - have inspired generations of walkers to enjoy the beauty of Cumbria. To mark the 50th anniversary of Wainwright's first Lakeland book, renewed interest in his books has led to the Wainwright Society being formed. Following the society's inaugural meeting, scheduled for November, Wainwright fans will gather to re-enact the walk to the summit of Dove Crag. Pictorial guide Supporting the event and the new group will be Cumbrian author Hunter Davies and broadcaster Eric Robson, who are among the leading figures behind the foundation of the appreciation society. On Saturday 9 November 1952, Wainwright walked to the summit of Dove Crag on the eastern fells of the Lake District. On his return, he wrote the initial pages of his first pictorial guide. Exactly half a century later, a meeting will be held at Ambleside Youth Hostel to form the society and, along with other enthusiasts, to re-trace Wainwright's historic steps. |
