Carlisle road closed after wall collapses
Scene of the wall collapse
Police have sealed off a street in the centre of Carlisle after the partial collapse of a building.

The accident happened in Fisher Street at 0930 GMT on Monday as workmen renovated a building in the city.

Police closed the street between West Tower Street and Green Market, after an end wall collapsed and rubble landed in the road.

The three-storey Grade II listed building is being converted into 20 flats for Peregrine Properties.

An engineer from Carlisle City Council is attending the site to assess the damage.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "We are interested in public safety, which is why the road has been closed off.

"We were informed of the accident by workmen who were renovating the building.

"There have been no reports of any injuries."

The police spokesman said the building was a partially-derelict structure which was being renovated.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area, which police say will be closed until the building is made safe.
