Motorist attacks 'attempted murder'

The police are treating as attempted murder two attacks on motorists in Belfast on Sunday.

Two drivers escaped injury after concrete blocks were dropped on their cars in Belfast as they drove on the Westlink.

North Belfast SDLP councillor Martin Morgan said the government must review safety measures on the Westlink.

He said youths were probably behind the attack and the local community and parents must "face up to their responsibility".

Warning

The attacks happened before 0630 GMT on Sunday as the vehicles were travelling under the Clifton Street bridge on the Westlink. Both cars were badly damaged.

In the first incident, a breeze block narrowly missed a front seat passenger. A block went through the windscreen of the second car.

On Sunday, Police Inspector Gareth Magowan warned that someone could have been killed.

"You've got to ask what sort of mindless person would do this sort of thing at this time of the morning? It was indiscriminate.

"We are also issuing a warning to those responsible," he said.

"We are looking at serious charges here - we are looking at attempted murder."
