Jon's brother and sister brought his body home

The first funeral for a British victim of the Bali nightclub bomb has taken place.

Jon Ellwood was laid to rest at St John the Baptist Church, in his home village of Aldbury in Hertfordshire.

The 37-year-old, who was director of studies at the International School at Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam, was praised for his "love of life" during Saturday's service.

Mr Ellwood was in Bali on holiday when he was caught in the blast at the Sari Club, in the resort of Kuta Beach two weeks ago.

Family statement

Mr Ellwood's sister, Totty Ellwood Aris, described him as her "soul mate" and read out a tribute.

The Reverend Janet Ridgway, a friend of the family and honorary assistant curate at the church, said in her sermon it was "difficult to imagine life without him."

In a statement issued after the funeral, his family said: "Jon devoted his life to teaching and promoting international understanding.

"Although working abroad, he returned regularly to Aldbury to his family home and local pub.

"The Ellwood family would like to express their gratitude for the support from friends all over the world.

"The hundreds of letters of condolence from friends, colleagues and past pupils show how sorely he will be missed."
