Remembered as one of the actors of his generation

Friends, colleagues and politicians have lined up to remember legendary actor Richard Harris.

Harris, 72, died on Friday at University College Hospital, London, following a battle against cancer.

Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern said he was deeply saddened by the death of Limerick-born Harris.

He described the actor as "one of Ireland's most outstanding artists" and added: "Richard Harris made a tremendous contribution to the arts and entertainment world throughout his long career.

"I wish to extend my sympathy to his family and wide circle of friends."

Hollywood legend

Film director Michael Winner said: "He was not only a great friend and a very wonderful person to be with, he was one of our greatest actors, and had this great charisma of the star, which extended to his private life.

"He was the archetypal star, he was like an old Hollywood legend."

Chat show host Michael Parkinson, who interviewed Harris three times - devoting an entire show to him on one occasion - added: "He was a hellraiser - it's a cliche, but that's what he was.

"He was from the old school of stars, like Peter O'Toole, strolling players, guys who love life."
