New lane encourages safe cycling
Kingsgate Shopping Centre
The new route allows cyclists to ride into town
Council bosses are hoping a new safety initiative will encourage people to get on their bikes.

A contra-flow cycle lane in Huddersfield will let cyclists ride against the one-way traffic on Cross Church and Queen Street.

The scheme is aimed at students from the Queensway campus of Hudderfield University and cyclists coming from the direction of the Holme Valley.

Car parking, taxi ranks and loading spaces connected to the Kingsgate Shopping Centre have now been moved to the other side of the road, to allow cyclists to travel in both directions along these streets.

The new lane, which is the first of its kind for Kirklees, links up with other cycle routes in Huddersfield.
