E-mail of the week: Estelle Morris
Read our e-mail of the week
We had hundreds of e-mails on the resignation of Estelle Morris from the government.
Here, Graham Hamilton from London explains why teachers were not satisfied with the former Education Minister:
My experience has been that, almost without exception, teachers have not been happy with Estelle Morris during her time as Secretary of State.
It is true that you can 'cherry pick' some good things such as the efforts on teacher workload from her time at the DfES but these have been swamped by the initiative overload pouring out of the department, the ludicrous attempts to micromanage the curriculum and the fetishist obsession with targets. It is interesting that failing to meet a target would appear to have played a part in her decision to step down. Hoisted on her own petard perhaps? Estelle Morris didn't like the intrusion of the media, in the same way that teachers resent the intrusion of the Secretary of State at every level in every day of their lives. Whilst her honesty in resignation is refreshing, the simple fact is SHE WAS NEVER GOOD ENOUGH to hold such an important position.
If representatives of the teaching unions, especially the SHA, think she was so good they should spend some time reconnecting with the views of those that are in the front line of delivering quality education - the teachers in the classroom.
