Summit focuses on muslim pupils
Education experts from around the UK were meeting in Leicester on Saturday in a bid to tackle problems facing muslim pupils.
Among the issues for debate was how to make British muslims feel safer. The high-level summit is the result of a collaboration between Leicester City Council and Leicester University. Delegates from education authorities and universities throughout the country are expected to contribute to the debate on muslim integration and the problems the Islamic community faces in modern-day Britain, particularly in schools and colleges.
Binman saved from truck An off-duty retained firefighter has helped rescue a refuse collector who got trapped in the back of his own lorry in Kibworth. The man had climbed onto the vehicle when a large bin became jammed in the mechanism. He then became trapped himself. The firefighter helped ambulance crews free the man. He was taken to hospital with leg injuries but it is not thought he was seriously hurt.
Plastic project grabs attention A new material made from waste plastics which is being developed in Leicester has already attracted international interest. The House of Commons Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee has visited the Panelplus project. The visit is part of their inquiry into the future of waste management. The panelling which will be lightweight, impact resistant and environmentally friendly will be used in the manufacture of vehicles.
More speed cameras planned Road safety officers in Leicestershire and Rutland are welcoming new research which says speed cameras significantly reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries. A pilot study published today by the government shows cameras can cut the number of people killed or injured by 35%, and reduce average speeds by 10%. Managers of the safety camera scheme in Leicestershire and Rutland are currently expanding the project with plans for six new mobile camera sites. In the pilots, money from fines went to buy more equipment.
