Family wins seven-year asylum fight
Tiananmen Square
Mr Su was involved in the Tiananmen protests in 1989
A Chinese family who fled to the UK after the Tiananmen Square massacre has won a seven-year battle to stay in the UK.

The Su family have been told by the Home Office they can remain in Manchester, where they have been living together since 1995.

Their battle began when Su Lian Hu was forced to flee China in 1992, fearing for his own safety after helping students during the massacre in 1989.

The rest of his family followed three years later to Dukinfield. They now plan to apply for British citizenship.

'So stressful'

Mr Su said he would be tortured and jailed if he returned to China.

Tony Openshaw, of the Immigration Aid Unit, told BBC GMR on Friday: "It has been so stressful for the family having waited for so long for this news. It took two phone calls to convince them it was true."

He said the Home Office had confirmed the family's right to remain in the UK in a letter.

"In fact it was the oldest daughter's 18th birthday on the day I told them. So it was very exciting to be telling them the news on that day," said Mr Openshaw.

A family spokesman said they were still coming to terms with the news and "plan to apply for British citizenship as soon as possible".
