Student murder trial jury dismissed
Liverpool Crown Court
The CPS will now decide whether there will be a retrial
The jury in the murder trial of a young law student has been discharged after it deliberated for more than 13 hours without reaching a verdict.

Andrew Greenwood had denied murdering University of Central Lancashire student and part-time police clerk Janet Murgatroyd in June 1996.

During the 16 day trial at Liverpool Crown Court, the jury heard the stripped and battered body of the 20-year-old was found floating in the River Ribble, at Preston.

She was attacked as she walked back alone following a night out, the court was told.

Mr Greenwood was granted bail by the judge.

The Crown Prosecution Service will now decide whether there will be a retrial.
