Flood scheme awaits approval
Hazelwood Park in Dawlish
Hazelwood Park suffered severe flooding in 2000
An £800,000 flood prevention scheme has been drawn up for Dawlish Warren in South Devon.

Two years ago nearly two hundred people had to be moved from their homes on Hazelwood Park after heavy flooding.

In August 2001 Teignbridge District Council then asked consultants to make a detailed assessment of the area and look at options for improvement.

Now the flood scheme has been submitted to the Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for grant approval.

Start date

The completed scheme is located along the banks of the Shutterton Brook at Dawlish Warren.

The local authority is hoping that other projects such as cycle and footpaths can be developed alongside.

John Crocker, from the council, said partnership between councils, landowners and government had helped to resolve the problem.

"Providing all approvals are in place and DEFRA are satisfied with the content of the scheme it is hoped that funding will be granted in January 2003," he said.

"Without such approval and funding from DEFRA the District Council will not be in a position to proceed," he said.
