Compromise saves Netanyahu government

The Israeli Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has survived a parliamentary challenge to his government, after reaching a compromise with one of the religious parties within his coalition.

Mr Netanyahu - who has only a slim majority in parliament - faced three potentially damaging bills, including one calling for early elections.

The compromise with the United Torah Judaism party changed that to a motion of no-confidence, which could delay a vote for two more weeks.

The BBC Jerusalem correspondent says coalition members remain fiercely opposed to any transfer of land to the Palestinians - and Mr Netanyahu faces the same hard choice he confronted when he came to power two years ago: whether to save the peace process or his right-wing government.
