Monday, December 7, 1998 Published at 12:02 GMT World: South Asia Indian film director hits out at extremists The director of the controversial Indian film "Fire" has criticised the government's decision to send it back to the censors for re-assessment. There have been violent protests against the film by Hindu extremists. They argue that the movie, which features a lesbian relationship, is immoral and goes against Indian social norms. But the film's director, Deepa Mehta, said the decision to return the film to the censors was a tragedy for free speech. Leading film-makers, artists and human-rights activists have urged the Indian Spreme Court to ensure the film continues to be screened. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
