Monday, December 7, 1998 Published at 07:25 GMT UK UK money for Holocaust survivors ![]() Many of the Jews were at Auschwitz Hundreds of Jews who had their property confiscated by the UK Government during World War II are to be compensated.
During the Holocaust many Jews transferred their assets from German-occupied countries to the UK.
The award, which follows a nine-month campaign by victims' families, is a major victory for Jews still campaigning for the release of assets in the US and Switzerland. However most of those who would benefit have died, and many of their relatives are living in other countries. In April the government announced a fast-track procedure for victims who had sent assets to the UK to claim for their property. The move comes days after the UK proposed a National Holocaust Day to commemorate the victims of Nazi war crimes. |
