Italians save face at last

Gustafsson grabbed Sweden's fourth victory of a triumphant weekend

Beleaguered Italy prevented a Swedish whitewash in the Davis Cup final as they clinched victory in the last rubber of the weekend.

Diego Nargiso saved face for the hosts with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Magnus Norman in the fourth singles match to make it 4-1 to Sweden.

Earlier Magnus Gustafsson defeated Gianluca Pozzi 6-4 6-2 in another dead rubber.

Gustafsson was untroubled by Pozzi as he continued the visitors' romp after they had clinched victory in the best-of-five final on Saturday with their doubles success.

The Swede broke his opponent twice in the first set and moved relentlessly in front in the second to wrap up his win.

But hopes of a 5-0 triumph were wiped out by Nargiso, normally a doubles specialist. The Italian swept aside 22-year-old Norman in front of a roaring partisan crowd in Milan.

Italy's hopes of winning the Cup were effectively dashed on Friday when No.1 Andrea Gauendenzi suffered a shoulder injury and had to retire at 5-5 in the fifth set of an epic five-hour opener against Norman.

Italian coach Paolo Bertolucci said: "I'm very disappointed. This defeat bothers me. I don't want to think about the future.

"We knew that Sweden were favourites. The boys did all they could. I would have preferred to have had a full team."
