Palestinian police launch weapons campaign

The Palestinian Authority has begun a campaign to confiscate illegal weapons in areas under its control.

The move is in line with the peace accord signed with Israel in October.

The Palestinian police chief, Ghazi Jabali, said many people had handed in illegal weapons during a grace period over the past two weeks, and others had applied for licences.

From now on, anyone found in possession of an illegal weapon could face a prison term and a fine.
