Inquiry into fresh prison unrest
Twelve inmates were involved in the trouble
An investigation has been launched after a second night of trouble involving inmates at a Scottish prison.
Twelve prisoners at Low Moss prison on the outskirts of Glasgow have been transferred to other jails following the unrest on Monday evening. It took staff three hours to bring the situation back under control. A spokeswoman for the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) said no-one had been hurt in the disturbances although substantial damage was caused to a dormitory.
Strathclyde Police said its officers were called to assist prison service staff at 2200 BST on Monday and officers were posted at the prison. The low to medium security prison, in East Dunbartonshire, has been earmarked for closure by the Scottish Executive. A group of prisoners was also involved in trouble on Sunday night and the SPS has refused to be drawn on what led to the unrest on both occasions. There have been a number of incidents at the prison this year. Discipline concerns Staff were involved in a stand-off with inmates on 29 April which ended peacefully. A 10-hour disturbance, during which a hostage was taken, was also brought to a peaceful conclusion on 21 April. Some prisoners were transferred from Low Moss to Glasgow's Barlinnie jail in mid-February following a serious overnight disturbance in two dormitories. Scottish Conservative MSP Bill Aitken said his party was concerned about security at the prison. He said: "Prison governors are unable to maintain discipline in their establishments, as has been borne out in the past few days at Low Moss. "The fact is that there is no incentive for people to behave. Prisoners will continue to riot and will continue to cause trouble." |
