Turkish police say they are still rounding up an estimated six hundred migrants whose ship ran aground in the Sea of Marmara, in north-western Turkey. The migrants, mostly Kurds from Turkey's southeastern provinces were attempting to reach Italy.
Police say they have found approximately two thirds of the passengers of the stranded ship, most of them women and children.
The rest have made their way inland.
The smuggling of boat-loads of immigrants is a daily occurrence in the region.Over one thousand illegal immigrants reached Italy from Turkey last year, prompting calls for tighter controls.
