A coroner will examine the remains this week
A child taking part in an organised woodland clean-up in Northampton has discovered human remains.

The alarm was raised at 1530 BST on Sunday when the remains were found in Lings Wood.

Police believe they may have been there for up to a year.

Naomi Cooper with Northamptonshire Police said investigations into the find were at a very early stage.

"It's not known whether the body is that of a male or a female", she told BBC Radio Northampton.

Ms Cooper said the case was being treated as a sudden death and there was no immediate evidence to warrant classifying the death as suspicious.

The coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will take place.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northampton police.
