Baby dies in road collision

Fire truck and car collided on the Derrylin Road

A baby girl from the Republic of Ireland has been killed in a road traffic accident in County Fermanagh.

Ciara Marie Lee, aged 21 months, died after the crash on the Derrylin Road, Enniskillen, at about 1120 BST on Monday.

The car in which she was a passenger was in collision with a fire appliance on its way from Enniskillen to take cutting gear to the scene of another accident.

Her two brothers - one aged three and the other just a few weeks old - survived the accident.

They were being driven by their child minder accompanied by her daughter.

Ciara Lee died at the scene. Her older brother and the childminder were injured, but not seriously.

Two firefighters were also taken to hospital but have since been discharged.

The three children come from Ballyconnell in County Cavan.

Both the police and Northern Ireland Fire Service have launched investigations into the crash.

In a statement the fire service said it would conduct its own "full investigation into the cause of the collision".

The fire service spokesman added: "The thoughts and the prayers of the Fire Brigade personnel are with the family of the baby girl who died and also with those injured as a result of the accident."

Police inspector John Maxwell said all of his officer's thoughts were with the child's family.

Motorcyclist recovering

Meanwhile, the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Fermanagh has been taken off a life support machine.

His condition is now described as ill, but stable.

The man, who is aged in his 20s was on a motocycle. on the main Newtownbutler to Lisnaskea Road on Sunday night when the accident happened two miles south of Donagh village.

A BMW car was later found abandoned nearby.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
