Man critically ill after assault

A man is critically ill in hospital after being assaulted in County Down.

Police have launched an investigation after the man was attacked at Newry Street in Banbridge.

Officers were in the area at 0230 BST on Sunday in an attempt to keep apart rival crowds who were fighting.

They found the injured man and called an ambulance to take him to hospital.

Police have called on anyone with information on the assault to contact them.
