Blaze destroys city school
Summerhill Primary School fire
Eight fire engines attended the blaze
A blaze which destroyed a school in the Drumchapel area of Glasgow is being treated as suspicious by police.

Some 70 firefighters battled to save Summerhill Primary School after the blaze broke out at about 0530BST on Sunday.

However, the building suffered what police described as "extensive" damage and has now been demolished.

Detectives at Maryhill Police Office are treating the fire as suspicious

Police spokesman
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire and a decision will be taken on Monday on alternative arrangements for the school's 92 pupils.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said no-one was injured and no other building was damaged as a result of the fire.

However, he added: "Detectives at Maryhill Police Office are treating the fire as suspicious.

"They would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the fire or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around Summerhill Primary School to come forward."

Eight fire engines were called to the scene after the blaze was spotted at the two-storey building.

Thick smoke

Strathclyde Fire Brigade said the fire was brought under control shortly after 0930.

Those living near the school were not evacuated but were advised to keep doors and windows shut because of the thick smoke rising into the atmosphere.

Pupils were not due to return to the school until Tuesday due to a public holiday in Glasgow on Monday.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said a meeting would be held on Monday to decide on the arrangements for the 92 pupils on the school roll.
