Farmers halt Bangalore train services
Angry farmers in the Indian state of Karnataka have brought train services to a halt in the state capital, Bangalore, in a protest over water.

The demonstrators oppose a demand by the central government ordering the state to release 0.8 billion cubic feet of water daily from the River Cauvery to its neighbour, Tamil Nadu.

The government of Karnataka has so far refused to give assurances that it will release the water.

This has prompted Tamil Nadu to launch a petition in the Indian Supreme Court in Delhi.

The Court is due to hear the petition on Monday. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service
