Cambodia looks to ASEAN

At the end of an eventful week in Cambodia, the government is now looking forward to its next objective - acceptance as a full member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The Information Minister, Lu Laysreng, said the regaining of its seat at the United Nations General Assembly would help Cambodia's drive to join ASEAN and attract foreign aid.

Vietnam, which hosts the organisation's summit later this month, supports Cambodia's bid, but Singapore and the Philippines want the new government to prove its stability.

Meanwhile, the remaining guerrillas of the Khmer Rouge who surrendered to the government on Saturday, are now beginning the process of reintegrating into Cambodian society.
